Dr.
Wallace is an attending anesthesiologist at UCSF School of Medicine
and the VA Medical Center in San Francisco and Professor
in Residence in the Department of Anesthesia and Perioperative
Care, University of California-San Francisco. Besides his clinical,
academic and administrative activities, Dr. Wallace lectures
internationally
on changing anesthesia practice. Prior to AVx Medical, Dr. Wallace
developed a new class of device to measure cardiac output- the
Endotracheal Cardiac Output Computer (ECOM) which has been patented
and has received FDA 510(k) clearance. ECOM is currently being
marketed by ConMed.
Dr. Wallace holds a Bachelor of Science in Engineering and Applied
Science from Yale University, and an M.D. and Ph.D. in Biomedical
Engineering from Johns Hopkins Medical School. He served his internship
and residency in anesthesiology at the University of California,
San Francisco and obtained his fellowship in Cardiac Anesthesia
from the same institution.
Dr. Wallace created and managed an Ambulatory Surgery Program
that treats 3000 patients per year. The program resulted in shorter
length of stays and $12 million per year in cost savings. Dr.
Wallace also established a pre-op clinic, managed nurse practitioners
and the day-to-day operation of the clinic for 5 years. Dr. Wallace
has been successful in changing management practice within hospitals.
He changed the surgical behavior in VA hospitals (from 100% inpatients
to 90% outpatients). Dr. Wallace also changed cardiology practice
by identifying and proving the benefit of widespread use of Beta
blockers and clonidine. It has been shown to be so beneficial
that beta blocker/clonidine care is one of the seven protocols
recommended by the AHA and ACC. Dr. Wallace promoted this practice
by changing the mindset of hospital management in 10 different
hospitals nationwide. This beta blocker/clonidine care change
can result in cost savings of $12bn annually in evaluation cost,
$40bn in operative cost and $500m in preventing death.
Dr. Wallace's most recent research includes surgical treatment
of congestive heart failure which clinical results have been published
in Circulation, study of endothelial function to prevent myocardial
injury during CABG surgery; developing off-pump mitral valve repair
devices, off-pump CABG devices, a device to reduce the incidence
of hypotensive events, and a non-invasive device to detect hypercapnia.
Dr. Wallace is named in 4 patents issued and has published over
60 different scientific papers. He received the B.B Sankey Award,
REAC Award-University of California, San Francisco, Foundation
for Anesthesia Education and Research Young Investigator Award.
Dr. Wallace is a member of California Society of Anesthesiologists,
American Society of Anesthesiologists, Society of Cardiovascular
Anesthesiology, International Anesthesia Research Society, Multi-centered
Study of Perioperative Ischemia (McSPI). Dr Wallace is also member
of editorial review for the journal Anesthesiology, Anesthesia
Analgesia and Annals of Thoracic Surgery.
